Land

The Sikhs evoke both historical and sacred associations with the land of Punjāb. The founders of the Panth traversed this region and in the process sanctified it, Gurū Gobind Singh bestowed it as a gift upon the Sikhs to rule over, and the Sikhs spilt considerable blood while turning his vision into reality attaining full glory under the stewardship of Raṇjīt Singh. Subsequent landmarks include a firm division of the region into Mālvā (British East India Company’s protectorate) and Mājhā (Khālsā rāj) around 1800, its partition into East (India) and West (Pakistan) in 1947, the creation of a Sikh-majority state called Punjābī Sūbā within East Punjab in 1966, the Khālistān movement of the 1980s, and the recent political dominance of the Sikhs of Mālvā.
